Neriage: The Convergence of Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Aether

Neriage is a traditional Japanese pottery technique in which multiple colours and grades of clay are sliced, layered, and carefully laminated together before being thrown on the potter’s wheel. The result is a natural marbling of swirls and textures — no two pieces are ever alike. This intricate process remains entirely handmade; there are currently no factory-produced Neriage vessels, making each creation wholly unique.

At Conscious Clay, this technique becomes a deeply personal form of remembrance. During the layering process, a small portion of the loved one’s ashes is gently wedged into each stratum of clay. In this way, the ashes are not simply added — they are embedded into the foundation of the vessel itself, held within every curve and swirl. It is a quiet act of transformation, where memory becomes part of the material.

Each Neriage piece is finished with a semi-transparent Japanese guan glaze (also known as a ‘snowflake’ glaze) on the interior. This allows the swirling clay to remain visible beneath the surface and gives the vessel a soft luminous depth. These forms — Shaped into the Teardrop and Whisper vases — can be used to hold dried or fresh flowers, or stand alone as sculptural memorials.

Through this process, Conscious Clay offers more than a vessel. Each piece is a visual and tactile tribute — a fusion of artistry, earth, and story — that symbolises the complex beauty of a life lived and remembered.
