Neriage
Neriage is more than a pottery technique—it is a marriage of forces, uniting different clays into mesmerizing patterns and textures. It embodies the essence of transformation, symbolizing the harmonious fusion of earth, water, fire, air, and aether.

Neriage: The Convergence of Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Aether
Neriage is a traditional Japanese pottery technique in which multiple colours and grades of clay are sliced, layered, and carefully laminated together before being thrown on the potter’s wheel. The result is a natural marbling of swirls and textures — no two pieces are ever alike. This intricate process remains entirely handmade; there are currently no factory-produced Neriage vessels, making each creation wholly unique.
At Conscious Clay, this technique becomes a deeply personal form of remembrance. During the layering process, a small portion of the loved one’s ashes is gently wedged into each stratum of clay. In this way, the ashes are not simply added — they are embedded into the foundation of the vessel itself, held within every curve and swirl. It is a quiet act of transformation, where memory becomes part of the material.
Each Neriage piece is finished with a semi-transparent Japanese guan glaze (also known as a ‘snowflake’ glaze) on the interior. This allows the swirling clay to remain visible beneath the surface and gives the vessel a soft luminous depth. These forms — Shaped into the Teardrop and Whisper vases — can be used to hold dried or fresh flowers, or stand alone as sculptural memorials.
Through this process, Conscious Clay offers more than a vessel. Each piece is a visual and tactile tribute — a fusion of artistry, earth, and story — that symbolises the complex beauty of a life lived and remembered.
Earth: The Foundation and Structure
Neriage begins with earth—the very clay itself. Earth provides the raw material that holds form and texture, grounding the process with its stability and strength. Clay is drawn from the depths of the soil, embodying the essence of patience and endurance. As it is mixed, it absorbs history—the minerals, layers, and traces of the past that shape its character. Earth represents permanence, reminding us that even as the clay transforms, it retains its deep-rooted connection to time and nature.
Water: The Fluidity and Adaptability
Without water, clay remains rigid and lifeless. Water breathes fluidity into the material, allowing it to be shaped, molded, and blended. As different clays combine, water ensures a smooth transition—just as rivers merge into seas, carrying memories and movement. Water embodies transformation and connection, ensuring that the separate clays do not remain divided but instead flow together effortlessly. It reflects the adaptability of Neriage, where control and surrender merge into a balanced creative process.
Fire: The Element of Transformation
Fire is what solidifies the union, turning soft clay into its final, permanent form. It represents completion and rebirth, transforming the blended clays into something enduring. Just as flames refine raw materials, the kiln’s intense heat binds the mixed elements together, ensuring the final piece holds strength and clarity. Fire reinforces movement, solidifying the artistry of Neriage and creating lasting beauty from fluid motion.
Air: The Breath of Creation
Air gives clay motion and energy, bringing life into the spinning wheel. It allows the artist to shape, carve, and pull the clay upward, guiding its transformation. Much like the wind shaping landscapes, air in Neriage allows the piece to expand and evolve with the artist’s touch. As layers of clay intertwine, air carries the unseen energy of creativity, influencing the final design with its delicate, invisible presence.
Aether: The Spirit of Harmony
Aether is the intangible force that unites everything, ensuring that the elements blend seamlessly rather than exist separately. In Neriage, patterns emerge spontaneously—they are guided, yet unpredictable, revealing a connection between the artist, the clay, and the forces that shape it. Aether is the invisible energy of intention, the moment when technique meets intuition. It ensures that the piece transcends its physical form, embodying a deeper story, meaning, and connection.
Neriage: A Reflection of Nature and Creation
The art of Neriage is more than mixing clay—it is an expression of balance, movement, and interconnected forces. It mimics the natural rhythms of the universe, capturing the essence of creation, transformation, and unity. Each swirl, each layer, and each pull of the wheel is a testament to the way elements work together, shaping something timeless and beautiful.
This technique honors the journey of clay, embracing the flow of change while preserving the depth of history. In every finished piece, the elements are held together in harmony, telling a story far beyond their physical form.
